Did you know that many women live with pain or reduced sexual pleasure and embarrassment due to a loosening of their vagina or large labia or elongated labia, most often due to aging or childbirth.

While a growing number of women are motivated to improve their sex lives and feel better about themselves, many don’t know where to turn or may feel too embarrassed to discuss this issue with friends, family, or even a health care provider. Our physicians want you to know that your health and well-being are their top priority. They have the experience, sensitivity, and knowledge to help you.

    What is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty surgery, also called vaginal reconstruction, is a labia reduction surgery to reduce and/or reshape the labia minora (inner labia) and the labia majora (outer labia) – the skin that covers the female clitoris and vaginal opening. The size, color, and shape of a woman’s labia vary significantly between women and may change as a result of childbirth, aging, and other events.

Labiaplasty surgery can also address congenital defects and abnormalities such as:

    • Caginal atresia
    • Malformed uterus
    • Malformed fallopian tubes

There are several different types of vaginal rejuvenation procedures that are typically performed:

What is the purpose of a Labiaplasty Surgery in Brooklyn?

    Large labia (labial hypertrophy)

Some women are born with an enlarged labia, which in medical terms is called labial hypertrophy, and therefore opt to have the vaginal reconstruction procedure. Whereas others develop the enlargement with age or from child-birth. Occasionally, a woman is self-conscious of her labia since childhood. In some instances, a woman with a large labia minora can experience pain during intercourse or feel discomfort during everyday activities or when wearing tight-fitting clothing.

    Enhance sexual experience

Others may feel unattractive or wish to enhance their sexual experiences by removing some of the skin that covers the clitoris. The purpose of a labiaplasty procedure is to better define the inner labia. Labia reduction surgery can greatly improve the aesthetic appearance of an abnormally enlarged labia.

    About the labioplasty Procedure:

Labiaplasty or labioplasty is a relatively minor surgery and is not very uncomfortable. The procedure takes about 2 hours and is performed with intense magnification to assure an accurate approximation of the normal labial edges. Labiaplasty Brooklyn is an outpatient procedure usually performed under local anesthesia.

What to Expect After the Vaginal Reconstruction Procedure:

After the labia surgery in our Brooklyn clinic, women may experience some mild discomfort and swelling, which will usually disappear after 1-2 weeks. Resting and staying off your feet for the first few days following the labiaplasty procedure are recommended.

    You cannot:

    • Use tampons
    • Wear tight clothes (e.g., thong underwear)
    • Have sexual intercourse for four to six weeks following the surgery.

    What Are the Risks?

As with any surgical procedure, there are certain risks. While there are few associated with Labiaplasty surgery, the most common can include:

    • Bleeding
    • Infection
    • Asymmetry
    • Scarring

Although these events are usually infrequent, they sometimes can occur. These will be discussed with you during the consultation for your procedure.

    Labiaplasty FAQ

    How Common Is Labiaplasty?

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), approximately 10,000 labiaplasty surgeries are performed annually. For comparison purposes: around 215,000 people get rhinoplasties a year, and around 300,000 people get breast augmentations each year.

How Long Does Labiaplasty Take To Heal?

Labia surgery is considered a relatively complicated procedure, even though it is performed on an outpatient basis. Doctors recommend taking at least 3 to 7 days off work after the procedure. You will also be prescribed antibiotics for the purpose of reducing the risk of infection. Moreover, your doctor can also prescribe anti-inflammatories to reduce pelvic pain. Specialists say that most swelling will disappear 6 weeks after the surgery. Residual swelling might take 6 months to disappear.

How Much Does Labiaplasty Surgery Cost?

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons states that the average cost of labiaplasty was $2,924 in 2019. However, you need to keep in mind that the average cost is only a part of the total price, excluding anesthesia, operating room facilities, and other related expenses. If you want to determine the total cost of your labiaplasty in Brooklyn, you should consult your doctor.

    Are Follow-Up Appointments Required?

Yes, normally, people who have undergone labia surgery need to have 1-2 follow-up appointments. These visits are required for your doctor to make sure that the area is healing well.

Do I Need to Do Anything to Prepare for Surgery?

Apart from taking a day off from work, it is highly recommended to get good quality sleep, eat healthy food, and drink plenty of water in the days leading up to the procedure. If you are a smoker, it would also be great if you could quit smoking a few days before the procedure takes place.
